MA Government Studies: Learning from and with practitioners

How the MA in Government Studies partners with institutions

Dr Jack Brown

The Strand Group’s new Master’s programme, Government Studies, is unlike any other comparable programme in the country. Students undertaking an MA in Government Studies will benefit from longstanding partnerships between the Strand Group and the core institutions of British government, creating a unique student experience and learning environment.

The Strand Group is totally committed to leveraging its networks and location at the heart of London to the advantage of its students. This means classes taking place in some of the most impressive and powerful locations in the city, alongside bringing the highest-profile guest practitioners into the classroom to enhance students’ understanding of how government really works in practise. It also means constant opportunities to build networks and develop deeper understanding of what it is like to work in and around British government, through the Strand Group’s partnered events and wider activities. It means a top-class academic education augmented by practical experience and development opportunities.

What does this look like in practice?

The programme’s core modules, Prime Ministers and No. 10 Downing Street, provide an overview of the key issues issues faced by postwar British government through the lens of the British Prime Minister. These modules have been taught in partnership with 10 Downing Street for many years. Students have visited and toured Downing Street, teaching has taken place inside No. 10, and students had the opportunity to interact with former Prime Ministers and the Cabinet Secretary of the day.

On the HM Treasury-partnered Chancellors and the Treasury module, the teaching panel itself includes senior former and current Treasury officials, alongside regular high-profile guests. HM Treasury also send a number of officials to King’s each year to study alongside King’s students, creating a dynamic and exciting learning environment for civil servants and students alike. Over 250 HM Treasury civil servants have now taken this class, with the Strand Group delivering a one-day version for officials alongside its main teaching commitments.

This is just a taste of what is on offer. Each module is different, but the commitment is the same. All Strand Group modules make use of practitioner teaching and being special guests into the classroom to enhance students’ experience and depth of understanding. The content itself is constantly refined and updated, informed by the Strand Group’s partnerships and the understanding of government’s inner workings that they bring. And it’s not just government and the public sector: the Strand Group’s commercial sponsorships offer opportunities to better understand and interact with business and the private sector too.
