Emilia will also evaluate why trade has been paired with so many other departments and how the government’s prioritisation of trade has fluctuated since 1970.
Prior to starting her PhD, Emilia moved from Staffordshire to London to complete her MA in Contemporary British History at King’s College London. During that year she undertook all four of the available Strand Group modules and became fascinated with their teaching focus on the impact of powerful personalities on politics and the inner mechanisms of government. She also completed a dissertation exploring the impact of Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun on UK election results where she was fortunate enough to use direct quotes from interviews conducted with Alastair Campbell and John Rentoul. Emilia’s undergraduate degree is in History and English Literature. Her final year her focus was almost entirely on the history side of her course and she submitted a dissertation on reactions to and the impact of the 1981 Scarman Report.
As a first generation graduate in her family Emilia is passionate about social mobility in academia and creating opportunities for those from less typical academic backgrounds. She is immensely proud to be part of a team which champions these ideas so effectively. Alongside academia, Emilia has worked extensively in hospitality management and sales roles and is an experienced public speaker.
