Sian Cleary

Sian Cleary is a PhD student researching the History of Digital Policy in the UK in partnership with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

Sian completed her MA in Contemporary History and Politics at King’s College London in 2023 and was awarded the MA studentship from the Chris Martin Memorial Trust.

She wrote her MA dissertation ‘From Dial-Up to Downing Street: an analysis of rapid technological advancement and the British Government’s response 1992-1997’. Sian received the Blair Years Prize chosen by Visiting Professor Baroness Sally Morgan for her essay on the Northern Ireland Peace Process. In 2011, Sian graduated from Queen Mary, University of London. Under Professor Jon Davis completing ‘Cabinet and Premiership’ and achieved a Double First Class Honours in The Blair Government Special Subject Course and Dissertation ‘The Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, (PMDU) 2005-2007’.

Sian has extensive industry expertise in Retail Technology designing and delivering multi-system technology projects and business process change for major retailers. In 2011 she gained a place on the John Lewis and Waitrose IT Graduate scheme and spent the last 13 years working as a Senior Business Systems Analyst for John Lewis & Partners, Marks and Spencer, and Primark. Between 2019-2023 Sian worked as a Senior Expert Services Consultant for Fluent Commerce – a software product company. She worked with retail companies globally to implement Order Management solutions and was the first consultant in Europe to lead fully remote training courses on the Fluent Commerce platform in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Between 2022-2023 Sian was appointed Product Manager for E-Learning, responsible for managing a team to deliver high quality online learning modules.
